Samuel Proffitt's Debut EP 'Blue Notebook No 10' Will Make You Sad While You're Chilling

The soundtrack to an emotional day in bed contemplating life.

Even when music is relaxing and makes you want to spend the day curled up in a warm bed, ultimately it might end up being shallow and forgettable. It's a testament to a musician to make music you can fall asleep to if you wanted, without it being boring. Samuel Proffitt has figured out how to do just that: he's an electronic artist who excels in capturing different facets of emotion through intricate and subtle songs. Which makes sense when you consider the turning point for Proffitt stepping beyond being a behind-the-boards producer to becoming a fully fledged solo artist was his roommate passing away and getting dumped by his girlfriend. On the same day. It was a real press reset moment.

Blue Notebook No. 10 goes beyond delivering plain "chill" music: each song conjures a different vibe, yet they hang together as a cohesive whole. Intro song "Cranes" begins with a delicate piano piece but peaks with pumping synths that make you feel as if you're being sucked into your computer. From there, the EP delivers one lush soundscape after another next—from the intimate yet dancable pulses of "Sladky," to the ambient reflections of "In Flames" (not that one band). On "Sirens" the voices of Jeff Sontag and Jess Zobler intersect and dance together, venturing into slo-mo R&B territory. It's a beautiful, poised debut collection and ahead of its release tomorrow on 1.27, you can stream it in full below.
