Former Friends Frontwoman Sam Urbani Finally Leaks Debut Solo Track "1 2 3 4"

And it's super sweet. Dev Hynes is on horn and piano arrangement and former Test Icicle Sam Mehran produces.

It was the tail-end of 2010 when Urbani first popped on our radar, back when she was the party-starting frontwoman of Brooklyn-based band Friends. They flamed bright and flamed out. Although hits like the sinuous "I'm His Girl" and "Friend Crush" will always remain, since then Urbani's mostly been dedicated to collaborating with her boyfriend Dev Hynes, contributing to Blood Orange tracks in the studio and as a touring live member. (Plus the occasional stint hosting Motherboard's three-part sonic nerd series Soundbuilders.) But as far as her own material, she's been quietly beavering away in secret, with not one peep to the wider world… until now.

"1 2 3 4" is a catchy slice of 80s-spangled pop. Funky bassline, check! Echoed bongo beats, check! Ominous synths, check! Oh and Urbani's sultry coo all over it. Hynes is on horn and key arrangement and in a hello! throwback! moment Sam Mehran is producing the whole shebang. Who is Mehran? Well he used to be one third of Test Icicles, the cacophonous post-punk trio, which Hynes was part of in London in the early 2000s. It's a family affair.

"The cheater never wins…" she chides. Just remember that folks. Here's hoping there's more where this came from.
