Rob Ford Did Not Invent Bob Marley Day

Toronto has been celebrating Robert Nesta Marley since 2001, you just started paying attention

Rob Ford has done a lot for increasing Toronto's global profile in the last few months, which is an impressive job considering he's essentially been demoted to a figurehead since shortly after he admitted to smoking crack. In spite of the fact that Rob Ford has a firm grasp on patois slang, which isn't an accomplishment considering how often the dialect is used in the outer edges of Toronto that Rob so frequently enjoys, he didn't personally designate February 6th as Bob Marley Day. Toronto has been celebrating Bob Marley Day since 2001, when Mel Lastman decided to honor the reggae superstar by having the entire city formally celebrate his birthday.

Bob Marley Day falling in the middle of the Canadian winter may prevent you from enjoying the outdoors at a leisurely pace like a true Jamaican, but there's no reason you can't celebrate it in your own special way. So lock the door, put a towel under it, turn on the heat and listen to some of Bob Marley's most Canadian songs.

Coming In From The Cold

Who cares if the Canadian winter is only 50 percent over? Come in from the cold and stare at a picture of a beach with this song playing in the background until you've thoroughly convinced yourself that you're on vacation.

Sun Is Shining

On this song, Bob lays out his plans for whole week in the first verse. Spoiler alert, a lot of it is just standing around and seeing the day rise.

Roots, Rock and Reggae

Robert Nesta Marley may have been a great human being, but that didn't stop him from wanting to be on the Top 100 charts.

Bonus: Full Performance in Massey Hall, 1975

Back when Toronto's mayor was David Crombie, Bob Marley and The Wailers came to town to preform at the historic Massey Hall. No word on whether or not Toronto's next mayor will attempt to one-up his predecessors by renaming the venue "Marley Hall" in 2017.
