G.R.A.M.Z. is a rapper from Flatbush, Brooklyn, but his new video for "John Carpenter" is all about trading in the grit of the Big Apple for something more laid back—the warmth of his new home in LA. The beat is straight out of the 80s but manages to not sound corny or played out thanks to a looming bass tone that flips it into something more futuristic to complement G.R.A.M.Z.'s bouncy, touch-and-go flow.The video takes us to the Santa Monica Pier when everyone leaves for the night. When people think of Los Angeles, their immediate thoughts tend to be all about the sun and palm trees. But this is a different look entirely, with glimmering carnival rides that begin to create an abstract atmosphere of their own. G.R.A.M.Z. takes us on a quick tour of this darker version of the city while the track thumps; the palm trees are ominous, the streets are vacant, and no one is giving a fuck about anything.
