Givers' Video for "Bermuda" Is Their Creepiest and Coolest Yet

Neil Young describes their music as "WOW!" And in this video singer Tiffany appears to have lost her pupils. Ew.

If Neil Young uses you as an example of music’s abiding ability to excite and entertain then you’re on the right path. In his autobiography Raging Heavy Peace, Young says he saw “a group called Givers on TV a few nights back and they blew my mind. It was completely original! WOW! It sounded like they were in a complete other zone from the rest of music.”

That’s Neil Young, there, the guy who is himself a “complete other zone from the rest of music.” Givers are the sort of band that will do that to a person, though, no matter how well-traveled and versed they might be. And if Young thought they were other-worldly back in 2012, one wonders what he’d make of the video for "Bermuda," the Lafayette, Louisiana band's latest video offering from last year’s New Kingdom LP.

“Bermuda” is an ambitious, sultry track that sounds a million miles from the upbeat guitar pop of the band’s first incarnation. When the track came out last September it seemed as though they’d ripped up their pasts and started again and New Kingdom’s experimental angle confirmed it.

But the video for “Bermuda” like the track itself, shows that the band’s knack for striking a nerve crosses genres with them. It’s a surreal trip through unfamiliar territory with singer Tiffany Lamson’s pupil-less eyes gazing back down the camera between slow dances and wide-angle dusk shots. It reinforces what New Kingdom demonstrated when we first heard it—whether they’re sweeping you up with jangling, uplifting melodies or smoothing you out with humid melancholia, Givers remain in complete control of their audience.
