Premiere - Listen to Methyl Ethel’s ‘Twilight Driving’

The trio present a stream of conscious pop that is drenched in the warmth of reverb and Perth afternoons.

Shenton Park, is a quiet, unassuming suburb in Perth's inner west. Home to a lost dog’s home, a couple of hospitals and an IGA where we once accidentally smashed a six-pack of beer, it’s also where Methyl Ethel recorded “Twilight Driving” a new track lifted from their debut album Oh Inhuman Spectacle.

Led by guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Jake Webb, the three piece present a kind of stream of conscious pop that is drenched in the warmth of reverb and Perth afternoons. Think Ariel Pink in fluro zinc.

We sent Jake some questions to accompany the premiere of “Twilight Driving” that you can listen to below.

Noisey: Twilight is a dangerous time of the day to drive. Are there many kangaroos out on the roads of South West at that time?
Jake Webb: You better believe it. They're in the lift, the lorry, in the bond wizard and all over the Malonga Gilderchuck.

OK, a Simpson’s reference. Nice.

Have you hit any wildlife with your car?
All three of us have hit birds before, not just at twilight. Two corvus coronoides and three grallina cyanoleuca down. We’re not proud, but it was us or them.

Is that footage on the video for “Rogues” found or is that the European vacation of a family you know?
The footage is found. It was shot by the late Mr Robbins Barstow. It’s his home video of Disneyland that features a pre-pubescent Steve Martin who was working there.

Who are some acts from Perth that we should be keeping an eye on?
Cosmo Gets and The Darling Rangers. We're also really excited about Daughtermelon's highly anticipated debut release, Blow It Out The Cat-Flap.

"Oh Inhuman Spectacle" is available June 5 from Dot Dash / Remote Control.
