PAWS' "Deceptacon" Cover is a Jangly Love Letter to Le Tigre's Kathleen Hanna

It came to them while recording their new album, 'Youth Culture Forever.'

There are some songs that are too sacred to touch. Le Tigre's "Deceptacon," a jump-and-shout feminist manifesto sung by riot grrrl Kathleen Hanna that's as close to perfect as a song can get, used to be one of them–until PAWS covered it. On their rendition, the Glasgow band along with Little Big League vocalist Michelle Zauner show that it's possible to put their own stamp on the track while still honoring its original state. It helps that their cover, which is even more lo-fi than Le Tigre's version, came from a place of admiration, rather than a need to make it their own. They wanted to pay tribute to one of their icons, who's currently struggling with a relapse of the co-infection she got from her Lyme disease.

"When we were at the studio in New York recording Youth Culture Forever we recorded this Le Tigre cover on the last day of tracking," frontman Phillip Taylor says. "We were listening to a lot of Le Tigre/Bikini Kill and when the 'Deceptacon' riffs started flying around on the last day we felt like it sounded strong enough to just stick it to tape. We had a little bit of reel left so we figured we wouldn't waste any and bashed this out in a live take for fun."

You might just get to hear their cover live if you catch one of PAWS shows since the group has been playing the song on their tour. Check out a list of their upcoming shows below.
