Noisey and Gentleman Jack Slow It Down in Houston for the Third Installment of The Backdrop

Largely ignored by hip-hop’s mainstream until perhaps a decade ago, Houston’s hip-hop scene is an insular one that in many ways emerged sui generis—informed equally by car culture, a DIY mentality, and a love of all things slow, Houston rap can often sound like nothing else out there. As part of Gentleman Jack’s ongoing Art, Beats + Lyrics series, the Backdrop went to Houston to chop it up with legends like Bun B, Scarface, andRob Quest, and got a tour of the city’s landmarks by Fat Tony, one of Houston’s top up-and-coming rappers.
