Meet White Spot, a One-Man Post-Punk Sludge Machine from Small Town Louisiana

Marcus Lemoine chats about Cajun suckling pig and what it’s like to be the lone noise guy in town.

Mansura, Louisiana touts itself as the Cochon de Lait capital of the world. Every Mother’s Day weekend, thousands flock to the annual Cocho Dela Festival to take part in parades, listen to Cajun music, and eat piled plates of roasted suckling pork. While Mansura is big on Cajun culture and cuisine it’s also the home to Marcus Lemoine, the town’s sole one-man noise damaged post-punk project.

Going by the name of White Spot, Lemoine punches out a dark and dank sound similar to the menacing sludge of early Amphetamine Reptile bands. It's a sound that owes a lot more to ACDC than Acadia. After a couple of self-released records, Lemoine has just released his latest album I Had the Best For a Little While. Stream it below and read a quick interview with Marcus about Mansura and his music.

Noisey: Are you a fan of suckling pig? What is the Cochon de Lait capital festival like?
Marcus Lemoine: If you've never stayed up all night drinking and roasting a pig with your family and friends, then you may want to add that to whatever you've got going on this year. I much prefer doing our own pig roast over going to the Cochon De Lait festival. It's just another expensive carnival with a few rides. There's nothing like passing out drunk at your own house/yard and waking up to a ten-hour slow roasted pig. Best hangover food ever.

Ugly and noisy music seems to be big down in Louisiana. New Orleans has a healthy sludge scene. Are there places to play in Mansura?
I've always had a huge obsession with sludge. I'm not sure if it's something in the water down here, but there are so many different bands from LA that play different genres that all have tinges of sludge.

Mansura is a town of roughly 1,600 people, and one of them enjoys the style of music I make. This is no place for "heavy" bands to attempt a show. Lafayette is probably the closest place from here that I would try to do a show.

I've actually never played a White Spot show. Being a solo musician, doing the type of music I do, I would have to recruit other band members for me to feasibly play shows because doing it alone would be either impossible or kind of awkward.

Have you ever considered expanding or are you happy as a solo affair?
As of right now, I'm happy doing the solo thing. Eventually, when my time starts to free up, I would love to get a group together and start playing places. It's incredibly hard to promote your band in such a rural area, and it's even harder when you don't play shows. But for now, I'm using the small amount of free time I have to concentrate on creating music and spreading as much noise as I can.
