Long Knife's "Negative Mental Attitude" Is Positively Amazing

Check out the new video now! Look for the EP on Feral Ward

Portland is, and has always been, a mecca for hardcore punk. Starting with Poison Idea and the Wipers in the early 1980s, the city has become a non-stop birthplace of excellence. But within all of Portland’s storied history, it is possible that no one incorporates the local sound better than Long Knife. Fresh off their debut LP Wilderness on Feral Ward Records, Long Knife is at it again with a brand new EP and music video. Order yours at Feral Ward.

Grounding themselves in early 80s American hardcore, Long Knife is not afraid to delve into moments that could almost be classified as classic rock. Imagine Kiss playing Poison Idea, with a healthy amount of Japanese hardcore and even some British hardcore thrown in. It’s this unique mix that makes Long Knife one of the best current hardcore acts. Long Knife’s Possession is four tracks of American hardcore the way it should be: unbridled, raw, and penetrating. But most importantly, Long Knife is a fun band. You need only to see their new music video for “Negative Mental Attitude” to figure out what they are all about.

Punk music videos are usually a joke. Concepts and storylines have gone out the window, in favor of cookie-cutter and bland “live” performances poorly set to music. Long Knife's new effort refuses to take itself seriously, throwing back to the VHS era, 80s horror, bad green screen, fire, and much more. It's gloriously cheesy. Take a look above.

Look for Long Knife on the road this weekend, playing a Noisey-Presented This is Hardcore Afterparty on July 27th with Power Trip and Mammoth Grinder.
