About a million years ago (March) when we dropped out Casablancas cover story we broke the news that Jehnny Beth from Savages and The Strokes frontman were collaborating on a song, and lo! It has arrived, complete with a video by long-term collborator Warren Fu (Daft Punk, Snoop, Weezer). Very VHS-vibes."Boy/Girl" is not an original, but rather a scuzzy, slurry cover of seminal Danish punk band, Sort Sol featuring Lydia Lunch. It's barely three minutes of twitchy punk. The pair met while their bands were touring in South America last year, but it wasn't until Savages' producer Johnny Hostile suggested they cover "Boy-Girl" that the plan solidified. The pair recorded the majority of the song in Paris, before sending it over to Casablancas to finesse.“I had never heard the song before and still have no idea what the hell the words are talking about," says Casablancas. "It sounds like a Danish dude trying sound like he’s saying English sounding words.”You can pre-order the limited edition vinyl, here, plus Casablancas's label Cult Records have just relaunched their site with a new mission statement from the singer:"The ultimate goal is to turn Cult into this time machine that exists to make sure that bands like the Velvet Underground can be more popular and appreciated in their time vs. twenty years later. I hope it can help deliver a supportive audience that makes cool and important art more commercial. It's kind of super ambitious, but my long-term dream is to create connections between all the cooler, more underground radio stations, record stores, thrift shops, zines and blogs, and artists and fans to be part of a more unified thing."Enjoy.
