Introducing Haarm and Their Blend of Raw Punk and Sand-Blasted Noise

The young Los Angeles band gifted us a new track from their forthcoming tape that you can shove in your Christmas stocking.

Los Angeles four-piece Haarm produce an aggressive style of music that leans on the noisier side of punk. We're talking the lurching sound of Jesus Lizard and associated Amphetamine Reptile bands of the 90s rather than the raging hardcore that's normally associated with Southern California punk.

Hailing from Atwater Village, a diverse neighborhood that in recent times has seen a spike in vegan taco stands and AirBnB listings, the band have a live recording coming out on small cassette label Outlast, and early in the new year are headed back to the studio to record a new new EP.

Listen to a new track "Haunted By Me" and read a short interview with guitarist Skin.

Noisey: You are from Atwater Village. How much does your surroundings play into your music?
Skin: Atwater Village is great. I wouldn't necessarily say that it has a huge influence on our sound, but most of the members, including myself all live here. A lot of us get dinner in Atwater Village almost every night. When I was younger, I used to see MCA walk around. My cousin later told me that the Beastie Boys had a studio in Atwater called G-Son studios, where they recorded Check Your Head. If you look up the “Gratitude” single release, the Beastie Boys are standing in front of a sign that says Atwater Village. I remember thinking that that was the coolest shit ever.

What/where is the F-Haus?
It’s a spot that our friend Sandor Finta owns, where he invites bands to come over and record live sessions. It's located on a very dark steep hill in Echo Park. Sandor mostly records a lot of black metal and doom bands. He had Scott Wino from the Obsessed/Saint Vitus come by and jam but he was playing bass and not guitar, which blew my mind.

Are there many house shows in LA?
There used to be, but they've kind of died out due to noise complaints. The Oxford House in East Hollywood had a lot of amazing bands play. The F-Haus actually still do shows, but it's more experimental industrial noise. They used to have a lot of heavy bands play there too, but again, noise complaints from the neighbors.

There seems to be chugging black metal and even some UK goth in your sound. What sounds were inspiring the new songs?
A lot of us have been listening to more doom and stoner metal lately. Bands like Melvins, Fu Manchu, Sleep, and EYEHATEGOD have been a huge influence on my guitar sound lately.
