Insult to Injury: Week Ending 7/18

Here's what the Noisey editors were listening to while being tacky Brooklyn girls.

Hi, welcome to Insult to Injury, where all the very hip Brooklyn Boys and Brooklyn Girls of Noisey gather around to talk about what music they've been playing at their backyard Bushwick parties this week.

TT the Artist - "Pussy Ate"
This week I went to Baltimore and Philly to shoot more episodes of Made in America. (If you haven't seen this week's—where Nelly teaches me how to say "everything" correctly and shares his views on the female species—watch it here.) Last time I hit up Bmore was with The Kid Mero (miss him!). We went to The Crown and talked to local luminaries like DDm and Abdu Ali about what was popping in the city. I also really wanted The Kid Mero to talk to TT the Artist, but unfortunately she was in SF. But this time, this time, I pinned her down. The episode is set to drop in a couple of weeks, but for now, please enjoy the above video and repeat after me: "Don't want no car, don't want no cash, don't want no date, I just want my pussy ate."

ILOVEMAKONNEN - "Club Goin' Up on a Tuesday"

This song is so fucking catchy. This whole past week, I haven't been able to stop a.) listening to it or b.) singing "I got the club goin' up on a Tuesday" as I walk down the street. The track comes from

ILOVEMAKONNEN

, a fresh face out of the always incredible Atlanta scene, and "Goin' Up on a Tuesday" is about pretty much exactly what you think it's about—he's in the club, and it's Tuesday, and he has it goin' up. The spacey, trance beats carry Makonnen's soft voice like it's a boat floating on water, somehow feeling slippery but completely in control. I'm in Chicago for Pitchfork Music Festival right now, but I'll be sure to bring my headphones to the festival because during the b

ands' sets worth sleeping through

, I'll just be goin' up.

Jeremih and Shlohmo - No More EP
Jeremih and Shlohmo dropped their long-awaited collaborative EP out of nowhere yesterday, and holy shit it rules. It especially rules because I am back in Chicago this weekend for Pitchfork Music Festival, and Jeremih is from Chicago, and I used to live in Chicago and play "773 Love" and walk down by the lake, so I am full of enthusiasm and feelings about it. But in particular I'm happy to finally have an extended cut of "Fuck You All the Time," and I am happy to re-realize that "Bo Peep" rules, and I'm really thrilled about "Let It Go," which sounds kind of like the Weeknd if he went poppier and got less skeezy. Jeremih's voice sounds so good I'd be surprised if you didn't unconsciously take off a couple items of clothing while listening to this and reading this blurb. This may already be my favorite R&B project of the year.

Catey Shaw - "Brooklyn Girls"
Kinda telling this song only got 137,000 views in a day when it seemed like the entire blogosphere was talking about it. But then again, I'd say that at least 30,000 of the people who watched this were bloggers who actually live in Brooklyn, who then all got mad and blogged about it (including Noisey's own Dan Ozzi, who I love dearly and wrote a hilarious takedown piece about this song). Yeah, I guess "Brooklyn Girls" sucks in a "this seems like it should be in a commercial for gum" kind of way, but on the other hand, what a ridiculously shrewd troll to put out a generically catchy song and give it cloying, maddening chorus. Good for you, Catey Shaw, I hope your song finds the Zooey Deschanel movie it was meant to soundtrack.

R. Kelly - "Step in the Name of Love (Remix)"
I can't think of Chicago without thinking of R. Kelly and since I'm here right now all I've been doing is listening to one of the greatest albums ever made, Chocolate Factory. Nothing says Chi summertime more to me than "Step in the Name of Love (Remix)," especially the video where everyone dances around a boat in all-white. People in Chicago just do things like that. I grew up here and can confirm that in this city two months of decent weather is cause for celebration. Chocolate Factory also feels fitting since I'm here for Pitchfork Festival and last year I'm pretty sure it peaked when R. Kelly headlined.

Weird Al - "Tacky"
What would our nation do without Weird Al? Sometimes I imagine there’s an alternate 2014 in which Weird Al never existed. Ronald Reagan’s preserved head in a jar is still the President and we all march in unison along to some Grammy-winning song by Keane. *shutters* Anyway, all hail Weird Al, the king of not taking things seriously.

Lil Bibby & Kevin Gates - We Are Strong
This song could have been the greatest thing to happen to culture, ever, but the sample sucks, so it will have to settle for being just one of the greatest things to happen to culture, ever. Lil Bibby and Kevin Gates are two of the scariest rappers currently rapping, and a song with the two of them trading verses could put fear into the heart of a great white shark, but someone decided to sample Pat Benatar’s “Love is a Battlefield” and make it the chorus, instead of having Gates sing some bluesy thug shit. I’d love to have been a fly on the wall at this studio session. I’m not sure if DJ Pain came in with this sample ready, or if he had to add it as the chorus after he realized that having a rap song with just Bibby and Gates would cause all nearby steel to bubble and bend. Either way, Pat Benatar sucks, but this song is still amazing.

AC/DC - "Jailbreak"
Last weekend I spent four days lounging by the pool, grilling, hiking, consuming lots of adult beverages, and generally having the best time on a short four day weekend. The soundtrack for a good portion of that was classic rock including literally an entire afternoon AC/DC. Has there ever been a band as American as AC/DC? Yes, I know they're from Australia, but there is something about them that just screams "lets crush some Buds and watch NASCAR." I mean that in the most "fuck-yeah" way possible. Here's one of their greatest jams, which by default means one of the greatest jams ever made.
