Insult to Injury: Week Ending 6/20
Hi. Hello. This is Insult to Injury. What the editors do here is spew out everything they've been listening to over the last week. Since some of the editors are out of the office, enjoying the big bright sky orb thing, whatever it's called, we decided to have one of our interns fill in. Please be kind to him.
My Ticket Home - "Hot Soap "
There's been a whole lot of talk about the "emo" revival (if there even is one), and in my opinion, everyone's focusing on the wrong revival. The one I'm unabashedly stoked for is THE NU-METAL revival. I remember this band, My Ticket Home, putting out a lot of chuggy metal core and not being super excited about it. But almost a year ago, they dropped "Strangers Only," which was a really ballsy change of pace that dropped the breakdowns in favor of some pretty solid songwriting. "Hot Soap" has everything I could ever want in a hard rock track; there's a meaty tone, a cool chorus, and just a generally catchy track. Puke Rock or die.
Beach Slang - “Kids”
Man, do I hate internet speak, but I srsly can’t even with this EP right now. It’s ridic. I saw these dudes’ second show ever this weekend and it gave me all the feels. They were #killingit. They have a four-song EP that’s epic AF. I could write a million words about em but for now, I’ll just say they are my spirit animal this summer. Puff Daddy - "We Dem Boyz" (Remix) ft. Meek Mill & French Montana
I don't know how it's not charting higher, but to me it's clear that Wiz Khalifa's "We Dem Boyz" is the best song for summer and one of the best songs of the year. It's pretty much all I want to listen to, which is fortunate because I hear it blasting somewhere on my street like five times a day. I wouldn't say that I needed a remix of Puff Daddy (RIP Diddy, but this will always be the superior name), Meek Mill, and French Montana, but I definitely didn't not need it. And even if this version subs out Wiz's amazing Auto-Tuned hook, it replaces it with the only acceptable alternative, which is Puff Daddy yelling. Meek's flow is killer, but it's really French who steals the show: i.e. "we eating healthy, nigga/got your favorite rapper asking for a selfie, nigga" and "denied my visa, missed that wedding up in Paris" (this, in case it's not clear, is an explanation of why French Montana didn't make it to Kanye and Kim's wedding). There's no replacing Wiz, but I'm happy to play this version and that one back to back HAAAAAANNNNN.
Breakdown - Runnin' Scared
I'm seeing NYHC favorites Breakdown tonight, one of the few bands from the late 80s with the balls enough to straddle the line between hardcore and metal. Much like Negative Approach, these dudes still have it live too. Fuck, this is going to be ugly.
Neil Young, Live at the Cellar Door
I turned 27 this week. That's not really that old, but it's old enough for me to realize that I have a significant amount of memories of my adult life. I've also realized that the older I get, the less I actually know about the world, which somehow, weirdly, makes me smarter. Anyway, it's no surprise I've found myself listening to the quintessential Thinking About Life music, Neil Young. Specifically, I've been spinning Live at the Cellar Door, his recent live album from a solo performance in 1970. It's a lovely record, and there are some gems on here—classic Neil Young, putting that gorgeously off-tune voice on peak display (and in a live setting it's oh-so good). But moreover, this is the kind of music you put on as you walk down the street in the bright sunshine and feel everything that's wrapped up in that moment. You think about that person, the last time you talked to your family, that dumb shit you did last night. You think about what you'll be thinking about a year from that moment. You're thinking about what that friend had said, and how you were hoping it was a lie.
Nao vs. A. K. Paul - "So Good"
Remember Jai Paul? You know, that guy who made a few amazing singles, then had his album leaked, then was never heard from again? Those were good times, but it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting anything new any time soon, so it looks like we should just enjoy what we have. And what we have is Jai Paul’s brother, who is putting out similar music. Who knows, maybe A.K. Paul is Jai Paul. Maybe you’re Jai Paul. Maybe I’m Jai Paul?
