Insult to Injury: Week Ending 5/2

Here's what the Noisey editors were listening to this week while arguing about Star Wars.

Welcome to Insult to Injury. This is where the Noisey editors list what they've been listening to this week but they're all arguing about Star Wars at the moment so let's just dig right into this before they get to Phantom Menace…

Seoul - "Stay With Us"

It's been a weird, emo week for me and I've been listening to a lot of Montreal band Seoul to try and quell the crazy. I say I've been listening to them a lot. I can only find two of their songs:

"White Morning,"

which we premiered earlier this wee, and "Stay With Us" (above), which dropped nine months ago. (Download it for free.) Don't call it chillwave. It's so much more than that. Please release more stuff soon, Seoul, I need MORE.

Michael Jackson - "Love Never Felt So Good"

Yeah, OK, I don't really care that this new MJ song isn't technically "new" and it was written in "1983" because "who cares" and hey remember how funny "quote humor" was? Anyway, this is the only song I'm going to listen to for the entire summer and if I don't know all of the words before I leave the office today I'm going to be disappointed with myself. The fact is that Pharrell and his beautiful hit-making face can suck it while I dance around a rooftop barbecue this summer, singing along to the King of Pop.

Young Thug & Metro Boomin - "The Blanguage"

I'm pretty sure Young Thug made the song of the year with "The Blanguage," though if you asked me why I loved it so much my answer would make about as much sense as Thugger when he claims he feels like Malcolm in the Middle. Turn up, tho.

Goosebumps - "Best Friend"
I'm gonna preface this by saying the last time I saw Goosebumps, they sounded like absolute dogshit. They are punk as fuck, were first to play in a new venue, and during a festival too (New York's Alright), so you know that all those factors lead to sounding like a steaming pile. That said, every other time I have seen Goosebumps it has been total chaos and mayhem, with the band leading all out violent assaults by way of stage dives, pits and the like. Plus their singer Ray Dryburgh can recite all of Dice's first LP by heart. V chill.

Rory Erickson - "I Walked with a Zombie"
I have two friends named Brian because that is how beloved I am among the human race. TWO Brians. I am #blessed. Anyway, Brian Number One is in a band called Plow United and is putting out a solo record which is fucking amazing. Brian Number Two (LOL “number two”) is in some other band. Together, they are in a band called Molly and the Zombies. I saw them this Christmas in New Jersey playing what I think has been their only show so far. They don’t even have enough songs to cover a full set so they covered this song. Above is the original and here is their version if you don’t mind a bunch of drunk New Jerseyites screaming things. If you grew up anywhere near Jersey, you’re used to that sort of thing.

Coldplay - "A Sky Full of Stars"

Since I set up push notifications on my phone for Coldplay this week and spent a lot of time

hunting for their lyrics around the globe

, there was no way I could avoid the fact that they released a new song. And man, what a song. "A Sky Full of Stars" is Coldplay's take on EDM, featuring Avicii, and it's pretty much exactly what you would expect Coldplay doing an EDM song with Avicii to sound like, with mushy love lyrics and some pillow-soft guitars and also a motherfucking drop. Coldplay and Avicii are literally a perfect match for each other. They are the yin and the yang of cheesy feel-good pop in 2014. I am surprisingly/unsurprisingly into this. Chris Martin's voice seems like it's only getting better, by which I mean his falsetto on the "ooh, ooh" and "you-ooh" parts makes me instantly tear up. Wow, I am a heart eyes emoji right now. Ilu Coldplay. What a magical week.

Vic Mensa - "Down On My Luck"

Since these weekly postings have seemingly become equal part diary entries, this would be the post where I tell you I just moved. Moving is a horrible chore since it involves you accepting longterm change while watching strangers mishandle your stuff. My entire moving experience was soundtracked by the new Vic Mensa song, "Down On My Luck." Despite its title, the song emits nothing but positivity, and sometimes that’s all you need to get you through some shit. And although the song is a huge departure for the Chicago rapper, with its bootleg Kylie Minogue beat and the shattered flows employed within, it’s a step in the right direction. Plus it’s cool when a rapper starts experimenting with sounds early in their career, or else they just become Lupe Fiasco. And the last thing we need is another Lupe Fiasco.
