Last Friday I went to see Drowners celebrate the release of their self-titled debut album by performing a sold out show at New York's Bowery Ballroom. Notably there was a mid-set stage invasion by illustrator Langley Fox and model Ashley Smith. They danced around and everyone grimaced and singer Matt Hitt looked mortified. A while later someone actually stage dived—props to that dude for doing it old school. That Drowners should inspire stage diving antics seems somewhat incongruous when you listen to the quartet's Smith-sian take on Britpop. On record it's a delicious blend of jittery guitars and melodic whimsy, live, however, Drowners sound just the right side of ragged, posessing an edge-of-it-all angst that's appealing in a whole new way.

This was particularly evident during Friday's rendition of new single "A Button on Your Blouse" (the video for which is premiering above). Here, the chorus sounds charmingly disconsolate, but up on stage Hitt's vocals came off energized and punkily serrated. Other great things about this song:

- The power play in the lyrics.

- The brilliantly British suggestion: "Why don't you undo another button on your blouse." So prim, so pent up. Drowners know what's up.

NB: This video contains plenty of making out, hand holding, snuggling, and back walking.
