If Ariel Starred in 'My So-Called Life,' It Would Look like Gothic Tropic's "Underwater Games"

Singing underwater is tough.

When I was a kid I dreamt of being Ariel because being a mermaid was like going to space but more beautiful. And with less chance of the robot who's been sent to protect you turning against you and trying to crack your space helmet. Or something. Plus your hair always looks amazing underwater. Just look at this video above by Gothic Tropic: singer Cecilia Della Peruti is doing her best Ariel, if Ariel was the star of My So-Called Life.

Amazingly Della Peruti manages to deliver lyrics looking totally ethereal. (Side note: This is very hard. I did an underwater photoshoot once where I thought I would transform into Ariel, but in fact, when the photos were developed I looked like I was on the verge of drowning while my face was frozen mid-stinkeye.) The video also utilizes this amazing shuddering effect—kind of like when your face starts twitching for no reason because you've been till 5am three nights in a row.

Musically "Underwater Games" boasts a sick bass line, the kind that Carlos D might appreciate, while Del Peruti's vocals glide by like Warpaint at their most narcotized. The LA trio, which includes Daniel Denton and Rheese Detrow, head out on a West Coast tour this month. Go see 'em!
