Firsties and Faves: Lowell

She tells us about her first love, first time she kicked someone's ass, and her favorite Spice Girl.

Lowell isn’t your typical pop singer who serenades listeners with love and relationship songs. Hidden beneath the catchy pop gems and sweet vocals is the chutzpah of Stevie Nicks’ attitude. Throughout her debut album, We Loved Her Dearly, Lowell sings about discrimination, rape, abortion, violence and LGBT rights with (oftentimes) sunny, upbeat melodies. Since we love Lowell dearly, we asked the Canadian pop singer tell us more about herself and the things she loves.

Favorite love song:
Oh boy. I don’t really love love songs. Does “2 Become 1” by The Spice Girls count? I just think it’s a clever statement. It’s not about dinner and a move, that’s for sure.

Favorite Spice Girl:
Baby Spice. I don’t know, it’s just a nostalgic thing. I was blonde, so by default I wanted to be Baby Spice all the time. In the end, maybe Sporty Spice or Scary Spice were the coolest.

First time you ever kicked someone’s ass:
The first time I remember and the one that I’m most proud of is when I was fifth grade and told off a bully. I was probably the shortest kid in school—they called me “Shortstop.” This bully was hurting these little kids in kindergarten. We had these swinging doors and he was blocking them, so the kids couldn’t go through. Then they’d pile up on each other trying to push through the swinging doors. He would jump back and they would all go flying down this flight of stairs, which is awful. They would get bruised up, and it would hurt them a lot. I remember saying, “Uou’re such an asshole.” He was like, “What are you going to do about it?” I thought to myself, well, nothing. Then I ran back up the stairs and punched him right in the face. It was awesome. He was a year older than me and probably twice my size. I was supposed to get suspended, but my principal high-fived me.

Favorite type of cat:
Tabby cat. Siamese cats I know aren’t as friendly. [But] in the end, they’re all the same. I’m not cat racist.

First thing you’d do with a million dollars:
I don’t get off on this question as much as some people do because I feel like I do whatever I want to do always. I would probably do more stuff with my live set and then pay taxes. That’s been my goal in life: to make a lot of money so that my taxes are bigger, and I can give more to the public. I don’t believe in charities, so I wouldn’t give money to charities. They shouldn’t exist; the government should be paying. The first thing I’d do with a million dollars is pay taxes. That’s the most boring answer anyone has ever said.

Favorite place in Canada:
I love Toronto. I just recently moved here six months ago. It is the coolest, and my favorite city in the country. Now I love going back to Calgary. My family is there. When I was growing up, I’m sure I hated it. They don’t play me on the radio there. Actually, recently they did, but I feel like they should play my music more since I grew up there.

First time you educated someone with your music:
I don’t think I really educate anyone with it. Sometimes when I’m writing with females, which is never, but sometimes I get into the details of what I feel about women’s rights and being empowered. Then, I try to see what they feel about it. Often, girls don’t even think about it. Some people do, and some people don’t. It just depends what kind of environment you’re in. I never really thought about that stuff until my brother brought it up to me. Then I just became fascinated with women’s issues and started studying them. You have to be careful because you’re constantly learning, and what you thought was right at one point might quickly change.

First love:
It’s so hard to say because you always think you love and then you’re like, “Oh what was I thinking?” I guess the classic Prom Date guy. That’s the first person I had sex with, so that counts, right? I could say Nick Carter because I really felt like I loved him, or John Smith from Pocahontas. I had a poster of the Backstreet Boys. I’m sure if I had the time I would have taken paint and painted over the rest of the Backstreet Boys and left Nick Carter there.

Favorite position:
I don’t know the names of them. Two Girls One Cup? I never saw that video though.

First dream job:
I wanted to be a figure skater. I wanted to go to the Olympics. I started when I was three and then when I was seven-years-old I went full-on. I went to the rink every day until I was thirteen-years-old. Then, I switched over to music.

Favorite song lyric you’ve written:
I write so much music. I write a song every day. I like the first verse of “Cloud 69:” “I’m like dynamite, need a cheerleader, let me throw you down while I look at her—I’m like—Oh my God, I think I need a girlfriend.” I feel like that one is super deep.
