Fei-Fei's Firsties and Faves, Plus Stream Her LP 'Pretty Girls Don't Hallucinate'

The LA based electronicist spills the beans.

Meet Fei-Fei, the LA-based DJ and music maker whose electronica is a deftly swirled blend of Balearic synths, booming dubstep beats, and spliced vocals—both soul-steeped and electronically pitch-shifted. Originally hailing from China, with some years spent in, of all places, Madison, Wisconsin (that must've been a culture shock), Fei-Fei's debut album, Pretty Girls Don't Hallucinate, is streaming below. "Like Goodbye" with its hi-hat flurries and the trap manipulation of "Little White Lies" are particular standouts. It's the kind of music an EDM-head and a fan or Purity Ring would fuck with. We decided to delve into her brain via Firsties and Faves

First fashion faux-pas:
I was a tomboy growing up and had no sense of fashion whatsoever. I wore super baggy shirts and hoodies that were not flattering at all. I won't even go into the pants… thankfully my good girlfriends have managed to teach me a few things about being a girl now.

Favorite position:
On top.

First love:
Some poor kid in kindergarten. I ran around terrorizing him and one time I tackled him down while threatening to smother him with kisses. I guess even as a kid I was never afraid to go after what I want.

Favorite body part:
Eyes. To lose yourself in… First person you farted in front of:
My parents are the lucky ones.

Favorite place on earth:
Anywhere by the water. I feel alive.

First song you ever wrote:
I started playing piano when I was six so I was always messing around, trying to make songs if you can even call them that. And every now and then when no one was watching I tried to sing on them.

First piece of advice worth following:
Follow your dreams. And be yourself.

Favorite pastime:
Anything to do with music. Given.

First fantasy:
To be a unicorn. When I was four, my parent's friends asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and that's what I said no hesitation. I'm still working on that one…

Favorite thing in your apartment:
My new bed. And my plants. And my old vinyl collection.

Favorite feeling:
Being inspired—it's the highest high. Pretty Girls Don't Hallucinate is out now.
