There have been way too many musical legend deaths recently and today we face another. Whilst still grieving the loss of Dick Clark and MCA, we received news today that the Queen of Disco has passed away this morning. Donna Summer -- née LaDonna Adrian Gaines -- was 63 years old when she finally gave way to her longtime nemesis, cancer, an illness she had been trying to keep under wraps from the public media circuit.
While her last few years may have been tough, Donna is best remembered for bringing her hot moves and angelic voice to 70s discotheques. She taught us how to shimmy on the dance floor while working hard for the money and she gave a classy name to bad girls (which by the way, I’m sure influenced Twin Sister’s “Bad Street”). Not only was she a five-time Grammy winner, but she was also the first musician to get three consecutive double albums go #1 on the Billboard chart. If you can’t get at least a shoulder shake out of this number, I don’t know what’s wrong with you:
With Donna Summer gone, one thing is for sure -- there’s a 24/7 disco party happening in heaven. Her family has released a statement saying, "While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time."
Instead of having a moment of silence, let’s all press play and do a little last dance for the late Ms. Summer. I don’t care if you’re at work or in a meeting. GET UP AND DO IT:
