Since the release of 2009’s It’s Blitz, New York art-punk-outfit-turned-indie-rock-stars Yeah Yeah Yeahs have laid pretty low, but Jason Bentley of Los Angeles radio show KCRW revealed today that a new record is coming in the “springtime” of 2013. There was also some buzz that LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy was producing the alleged release, but he has recently denied these reports. Murphy brushed it off exactly as music industry royalty tend to: “I just did a little fun stuff. Nothing really big; I don’t have time and they don’t have time.” Famous people are sooooo busy.
Okay, so should we be excited about this album? Yes.
Since the early days when Karen O would do her best metal-dude impression in songs like “Art Star” to the superstar Interscope days of pop perfect hits like “Dull Life” or “Zero,” the band has always kept the right pieces of themselves while still evolving for the better. Karen O is still the same front woman crazy enough and die-hard enough to perform in a wheelchair, it's just that now, she’s got really nice shoes and stuff. The band has grown from minor to major in a very respectable way. The songs got better with the band never dropping the signature elements of their original sound. They added, not changed. This is not easy, especially with the pressure of agents, managers, producers, and all the others who tell musicians what the fuck to do. Respect.
