I watched this with two of my mates who happen to be gay girls. I liked it a lot, but they loved it. They told me that all lesbians love Grimes. Like LOVE Grimes.
Obviously it makes sense; she's cool, clever, talented, pretty, well dressed, not a douche - but still, it sounded like a sweeping statement. So I asked some lesbians I know on Facebook.
Turns out all lesbians LOVE Grimes. I asked a few of them why.
ARVIDA

Hello! Do you love Grimes?
Yes!
Where would you take her on a date?
How long would I have? Maybe I would just kidnap her and take her to the archipelago outside Stockholm and we could live in a lighthouse for a week or something. Otherwise I'd probably take her to Värmdö, were I live, 20 mins outside of Stockholm. The nature's kind of pretty here, but there are still some places that are a lil bit concrete-y so we could bike around, tag up some walls and go and swim in a lake.
That sounds like fun. Does she influence the way you dress?
Yeah, kinda. I really like anything with camouflage and I think I saw her wearing something camo-ish some time.
What's your favorite song of hers?
Probably "Be a Body". That song makes me think a lot of my best friend, Katja. "Oblivion" is the perfect song for driving though.
Who do you think would be her perfect lover?
I'm just praying to all the bad-ass Gods of the universe that she isn't pure straight. I would be her perfect boyfriend of course.
Has she ever done anything you're not in love with?
She once said something about young artists making art that doesn't mean anything; comparing them to old art and basically saying they are of a lower quality. I think it's just that new art lacks an objective historical context. I definitely disagree with her on that but I still love her, she's awesome.
KATE

Hi Kate. Why do you love Grimes so much?
Because she is like, sparkles and attitude all in one, without being overtly anything except herself. She is hyperbole, and I like that in an artist.
Where would you take her on a date?
The Pokemon Snap Cave level.
What movie would you take her to see?
My Little Pony.
Does she influence the way you dress?
She's like a white dove, wearing a spiked vest stuffed with sawdust and diamonds. I wish I was as delicate as her, but I'm not.
What's a song you'd play her that you don't think she knows and why?
I would play her Kate and Anna McGarrigle's "Heart Like A Wheel" because I think she'd like it.
Do you think she would love you back?
Well, I think she transcends typical sexual definition. Although in the back of mind maybe she's like that freaky girl Esther in Orphan. Someone who you think is really young and naive and actually is a full grown sexual woman and it's really sinister.
Who'd be her perfect partner in your eyes?
Aliya Mustafina
LAUREN
Why do you love Grimes so much?
I love that she's not just a regular musician. She's like this institution. Everything from her sound, to her style, her live performances and her artwork - they're are all under the umbrella of Grimes. It's almost as if she's like this company, which I think is cool. It must take a lot of effort and consideration to not only hone a sound but a full character, or world. I respect that.
What movie would you take her to see?
I read that she's really into Life Aquatic, so I would probably pull out some Steve Zissou in the hopes that it would score me some brownie points and she'd take me on tour with her. A girl can dream.
Does she influence the way you dress?
I totally got 'Grimes bangs' once. I saw the video for "Oblivion" and got handy with a pair of Ikea scissors. I decided it was best not to try and impersonate her style any further after that.
What's your fav song of hers?
Probably "Crystal Ball" that she did with D'eon. I remember hearing it and thinking, "Shit, this is the kind of music I want to be making". It just sounded really special and weird.
What's a song you'd play her that you don't think she knows and why?
That's pretty hard, because I imagine Grimes knowing all the cool, worthy music ever. If I played her some sebastiAn or Deerhunter and she was like, "Woah, who is this?" the illusion would be shattered.
Do you think she'd date you?
Well, I doubt that Grimes is either straight or gay. She seems like she would be a fluid kind of person, like if she had a couple wine coolers she wouldn't mind a bit of vag.
Who'd be her perfect lover in your eyes?
Besides me? Definitely someone as equally talented and gorgeous. It would be sweet if she dated someone that she could collaborate with on a musical level as well. Maybe Andrew VanWyngarden from MGMT or Gaspard Augé from Justice.
Is there anything you don't agree with her about?
Skrillex.
EMILY

CLARA

Why do you love Grimes?
Because she looks like a happy little mouse. Like you've just shown her the thing in the world that makes her happiest.
What movie would you take her to see?
My Summer of Love, by Pawel Pawlikowski.
What's your favourite song of hers?
"Favriel" from the album Halfaxa
What music would you introduce her to?
"Sweet Lullaby" by Deep Forest. Even if she already knows it, I'd show her the French shampoo commercial that used it. It'll make her mind peaceful and she'll forget her insecurities.
Who'd be her perfect lover in your eyes?
Tupac. Hologram version.
Is there anything you don't agree with her about?
The sudden change of her style, but it fits her quite well, so whatever.
Thanks y'all!
