"Daughter, Daughter" by D/C Will Make You Root for the Supposed Bad Boy

When will parents understand that when they butt into your love life, you're gonna run 100 miles per hour in the other direction?

Have you ever had a parent disapprove of your partner? That emotional tug of war is the worst. I mean I get it, parents want the best for their kids, of course, but half the time when the 'rentals are sticking their oar in it has more to do with their past mistakes, that lurking dread that your kid will walk down that same thorny path. They might be looking out for you, but their blinkers are on and so often they're also projecting. It's exhausting to keep fighting for your right to make your own mistakes. Not to mention the fact that such opposition will send you cantering in the other direction. Obviously.

Twenty-three-year-old Londoner [D/C](https://soundcloud.com/thatdckid ) writes "Daughter/Daughter" (premiering below) from his perspective—as a boy who likes a girl who has a protective dad, who in turn views D/C as a dead-end prospect. After all, he's not a lawyer, or a banker, or a doctor. He's a musician. Oh. Actually that means he's trouble. Dad is probably right to be wary in this instance!

There's no shortage of dudes doing parsed back, confessional soul right now (James Blake, Jamie Isaac, King Krule, Jaymes Young, Erik Hassle), but with its build up of stuttered beats, kicks, and vocal cascades, this track serves to buoy up D/C's best asset: his husky, soul-toned timbre that cracks in all the right places. Did I mention he also plays the cello. A highly underrated instrument.

D/C's debut EP is out on March 31.

Kim vows to never try and break up her future spawn's romantic relationships. Unless her kids end up trying to date a crack addict or somesuch. She's on Twitter - @theKTB.
