When an artist makes a sudden stylistic switch, it can often be a bit of a head-scratcher. In the case of Californian act Crowhurst, the gradual evolution from experimental noise to psychedelic doom-infused black metal feels as natural as anything else in the band’s staggering discography. As an experimental act, Crowhurst spent its first few years as the creative outlet of vocalist and analog synthesizer freak Jay Gambit with an ever-shifting batch of collaborators. As Crowhurst evolved to become a live band, a consistent lineup emerged, leading to an entirely new sound for the band’s self-titled LP.

Over the course of seven songs and approximately forty minutes, Crowhurst makes nods to its experimental roots while delivering a consistently tense and angular hybrid of black and doom metal. With production by Jack Shirley, this sounds as massive as possible without polishing away the ugliness that makes Crowhurst so unsettlingly addictive. While the album’s urgent and promising single “Judgment” has already been unleashed, along with an EP of remixes from notable members of the noise community, the album’s closing track “Luna Falsata” is where the band pays greatest homage to its experimental roots.

With guest vocals by Eugene Robinson of legendary shit-starters Oxbow, “Luna Falsata” is a nine minute swarm of doomy guitars, throbbing electronics, and confrontational vocals with a monologue from Werner Herzog as the lyrical foundation. Listen to it song below, and get uncomfortably excited to buy the full album from Ivory Antler Recording & Publishing on April 10.
