Courtney Barnett Is Excited to Shower

We caught up with the Aussie at Coachella, and she told us about the awful things she's seen at festivals.

Know this: Aussie singer songwriter Courtney Barnett is fucking majestic. Like Evan Dando and Sheryl Crow after a midnight spliff summit and grilled cheese making session, her tongue in cheek storytelling songs are as hilarious as they are psychedelic and bloody delicious too. She’s at this year’s Coachella, wearing a lot of tie-dye and playing songs from last year’s double EP reissue A Sea Of Split Peas. Her first proper album sessions have just finished up, and it’ll hopefully be released by the end of the year. In the meantime, here’s her festival firsties and faves to tide you over.

Favorite awful thing you’ve seen at a festival?
I’ve seen some awful things at festivals, but I don’t know how appropriate some of them are… I guess seeing people passed out in their own erm, y’know, materials. It’s not my favorite—I find it really sad. It’s funny but it’s not funny, it’s kind of depressing.

First festival?
Homebake—it’s this festival in Sydney, and it’s one day. It’s in this beautiful park just near Sydney Harbor. I was 14 or something. It was all Australian acts like the Hoodoo Gurus.

The first thing you bought at a festival?
At one of the Big Day Outs I went to I bought one of those big novelty sized hammers. I don’t know why. I annoyed my friends with it for five minutes and then threw it away.

First good band you saw at a festival?
I saw Dan Kelly at the Falls Festival in Tasmania and I loved that. He had a six piece band and they were all singing pop songs and doing harmonies.

Your first dance tent experience?
Chemical Brothers at Big Day Out! It was fucking amazing – it was in my drugs stage. You can take a guess as to what kind. They had an amazing light show.

The first thing you packed for Coachella?
Sunscreen.

The first thing you do when you get home from a festival?
Have a shower and then listen to some classical music.
