We've got a lot of time for Rey Pila. For a start, singer Diego Solórzano's taste in scary movies is solid gold, secondly, he writes melodies that sound fresh and classic—like a clutch of forgotten 70s/early 80s hits teenagers used to get drunk and make out to. A little new wave, a little Cars, a little bit of a Bowie quaver, a pinch of Q Lazzarus, a lot of switchblade cool.Noisey's been championing this Mexico City-based band since back in 2011, but now their second album is imminent. It's also their first under Julian Casablancas's label, Cult Records, and will surely appeal to fans of The Strokes—just listen to the nimble pop of "Surveillance Camera and the urgent guitars and propulsive groove on "Order Police." Elsewhere the title track chorus blisters with a furious warning wrapped in an anthem and "White Night" bears traces of Depeche Mode: the perfect song for a 4 AM drive when you have one too many torturous thoughts stampeding round your head. When we premiered "What a Nice Surprise" back in July we said—yeah, that's right, we're quoting ourselves—Diego's vocals are "the sonic equivalent of your lover lying in rumpled, morning-after sheets, pleading for you to come back to bed, even though all you're trying to do is get up to make some coffee." Well, it's still true.The band had this to say about their soon-to-be-released opus: "'We need to talk about the future, sugar…' That's a phrase from David Lynch's movie, Wild at Heart, that inspired the title of one of the demos we were working on three years ago, and that ended up fitting perfectly as our new LP's title."Well, in many ways, that future is here, now. Welcome to The Future Sugar. It's been a long, but exciting path to get to this album out. Finally. From our studio in Colonia Roma, Mexico City, to DFA Studios in NYC with producer Chris Coady (Beach House/Yeah Yeah Yeahs), to accidentally crossing paths with the amazing Cult Records. The album is a collection of six songs from those DFA studio sessions in 2012, plus three new songs recorded and co-produced a few months ago with Julian Casablancas and Shawn Everett (Weezer)."Hope you enjoy it, have fun with it, take it with you.
